All Peace Corps Volunteers, Response or otherwise, must take medication to prevent malaria while in Guinea. Since mephaquin (AKA Lariam) didn't sit particularly well with me and antibiotics in the -cyclin family(like doxycyclin) have been known to make me break out in hives, that leaves me with Malanil (AKA Malarone. It's expensive, but I haven't had any noticeable side effects and, since I really don't want to get malaria, I do my best to make sure I take it every day.

For awhile my pills came in a bottle, and sometimes it was hard to keep track of whether or not I'd taken it. When they started giving me boxes of blister-packed pills I thought it was unnecessary packaging, but then I realized that blister-packs are really handy for labeling, and I haven't had any did-I-take-it-or-was-that-yesterday issues since.
